Case detection of Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB) is very low in Southern Africa despite the region being home to 5 of the 30 MDR-TB High Burden countries in the world. Currently, MDR-TB case detection stands at 9% in Mozambique and Zambia and 30% in Lesotho, with treatment outcomes ranging from 33% in Zambia to 63% in Lesotho. MDR-TB has become a serious emergency, hence there is need to work together to strengthen efforts towards capacity building in MDR-TB control.

Experts from Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia have provided country information that will feed in to the process of completing the proposal development for the Cost-Benefit analysis and health impact studies which will be implemented and coordinated with technical support from the East Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA-HC).

Gaborone, Botswana – Following the successful launch of the Southern Africa Tuberculosis and Health Systems Support Project (SATBHSSP) in December 2016, the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Secretariat and the project implementing partners, NEPAD Agency, East Central and Southern Africa Health community (ECSA-HC) and World Bank (WB) held interactive discussions on the regional implementation approach of the project.
