Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have come together to establish the first cross border disease surveillance committee under the Southern Africa Tuberculosis and Health Systems Support (SATBHSS) project. The main aim of this is to strengthen coordination of cross-border disease surveillance, conditions and events of public health importance, as well as joint response to disease outbreaks and emergency preparedness across borders using One Health Approach.

33% of TB cases remain undetected in Zambia and the Ministry of Health has set a target of reducing TB prevalence by at least 35% by 2020. In order to achieve this, there is need to secure commitment from the leaders, and double efforts and resources to close the funding gap in TB screening, diagnosis and treatment. Responding to this need, 75 parliamentarians have registered and launched the Zambia chapter of the parliamentary caucus on TB. The caucus will advocate for increased funding towards eradicating TB, among others.

Though TB Prevalence rates in Copper belt province in Zambia, is mainly attributed to the occupational risks associated with the mines, the burden of TB among mine workers and mining communities is not entirely known. The Workmen’s Compensation Act and the Occupational Health and Safety Act stipulates that any mine worker diagnosed with either TB or silicosis should not work in a scheduled area of the mine. This has proved to be a barrier to seeking care for TB within the mine health institutions. Furthermore, the potential for loss of employment and income due to TB diagnosis prevents care seeking by this population-high risk for spread of TB. Miners also offer false addresses, hence lost to followup.

Despite having a regulatory framework in place that empowers government entities including the ministry of labour, department of Mines and Ministry of Health to conduct joint mines inspection in a bid to ensure adherence to good safety standards, not much was being done due to inter-ministerial coordination challenges..
